HL7 v2 tables
A table is the list of values a coded field may carry. The standard references 474 of them and prints values for 341. The rest are named without a value list, which means the standard is deferring to somewhere else and a receiver has nothing to validate against.
HL7 tables and user-defined tables
An HL7 table has values fixed by the standard. A code outside the list is an error, and a validator should say so. There are 166 of these.
A user-defined table has values the standard suggests. A site is free to extend or replace them, so a code outside the list is not an error and rejecting it will break real interfaces. There are 307. Table 0001, administrative sex, is user-defined, which surprises people who have written a validator that rejects anything unrecognised.
HL7 tables list
All 474 of them, 341 with values printed. This is a reference list, not something to read end to end; the table behind a field is linked from that field's own row.
