About Medblocks

Medblocks is building a developer-focused “stack for healthcare” that makes it possible for anyone to build applications that integrate directly with clinical workflows without rebuilding expensive Electronic Medical Records systems. We believe code has the potential to save more lives than doctors can by themselves.

Founded by doctors-turned-programmers, our team leverages open, vendor-neutral standards like openEHR, FHIR, SMART, and SNOMED CT to create a platform that makes healthcare data accessible, interoperable, and useful.

Our Culture

At Medblocks, we operate with three core values:

Trust: We trust you’ll get your work done without micromanagement. We don’t enforce working hours or monitor your activity—we measure outcomes, not outputs.

Transparency: We believe information flow is at the heart of a healthy company. We share detailed financials and metrics with our team and maintain open communication about company direction.

Customer Value & Honesty: We’re obsessively focused on delivering value to our customers and maintaining honest relationships about what our technology can and cannot do.

We’re a team that values deep work, clear communication, and continuous learning. We’re building technology that matters, and we’re looking for individuals who want their code to make a difference in healthcare.

The Role

We are seeking a Technical Lead to guide our technical roadmap, lead open-source health tech initiatives, grow our global developer community, and elevate our educational platform. If you are a seasoned engineer passionate about system architecture, engineering standards, open-source maintainership, and empowering developers to build and innovate, this high-impact dual role is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Lead system architecture and technical strategy for Medblocks open-source healthcare software (Node.js, Java, or Python backends; React, Next.js, or similar frontends). Drive robust database design and data modeling across the stack, requiring deep experience with databases, particularly relational databases (SQL) like PostgreSQL.
  • Oversee, maintain, and scale core Medblocks open-source repositories, enforcing code quality standards, conducting deep code reviews, managing release cycles, and prioritizing maintainability and security.
  • Act as the technical authority on client engagements, leading requirement gathering, architecture reviews, and technical design discussions while guaranteeing end-to-end delivery success.
  • Translate complex business, AI, and clinical workflows into modular, scalable microservices using open standards such as FHIR, openEHR, SMART, and SNOMED CT.
  • Direct and curate the Medblocks learning portal, course materials, sample apps, and curriculum frameworks to deliver best-in-class developer education.
  • Author high-impact technical articles, system design docs, and whitepapers for a global engineering audience.
  • Mentor internal developers, guide external community members via forums, workshops, webinars, and masterclasses, and foster an active developer ecosystem.
  • Combine deep product thinking with engineering excellence to drive end-to-end user experience (UI/UX), developer experience (DX), and solution architecture. Champion best practices across coding standards, API design, clinical solutioning, technical documentation, and overall platform usability to ensure Medblocks products are intuitive, scalable, and seamless for developers and healthcare end-users alike.
  • Partner with founders, product teams, and education teams to identify core developer friction, emerging tooling needs, and new educational opportunities.
  • Represent Medblocks as a key technical voice at conferences, hackathons, and industry events through keynotes, talks, and live technical demos.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience building and shipping modern web applications (Node.js, Java, or Python backend; React/Next.js or similar frontend frameworks).
  • 2+ years in technical leadership, guiding engineering strategy, leading client architecture, or acting as a Tech Lead / Architect on production-grade systems.
  • Proven mastery of database design, API design (REST/GraphQL), microservices architecture, and system scalability.
  • Hands-on experience in teaching, mentoring, developer training, or community leadership—must have designed curriculum, evaluated technical learners, or built technical bootcamps/training programs.
  • Proven track record of explaining complex technical topics (via engineering blogs, technical portfolios, conference talks, or video walkthroughs).
  • Fluent spoken and written English with an exceptional ability to simplify complex system design concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative leader with high technical standards and a deep passion for open source, developer experience, and healthcare transformation.

Nice to Have

  • Core maintainer or significant contributor status in major open-source projects.
  • Direct domain experience with health tech standards (FHIR, openEHR, DICOM, HL7).
  • Strong cloud & DevOps foundation (Docker, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Redis, Firebase, CI/CD pipelines).
  • Experience managing client relationships, technical strategy, and cross-functional teams in a high-growth startup environment.

Benefits

  • We pay our people well because we know top talent deserves top rewards
  • Complete autonomy to design and build our AI assistant from the ground up
  • Direct collaboration with founders on technical strategy
  • Transparent company financials and metrics
  • Regular opportunities to speak at conferences and write technical content about AI in healthcare
  • Travel opportunities for team meet-ups and conferences
  • Liberal leave policy with no micromanagement
  • The chance to build AI-powered healthcare tools from first principles
