Welcome to the FHIR App Challenge

Congratulations on joining the challenge! Over the next 15 days, you will build your first FHIR application.

A few things before you get started

Here is your invitation to join the FHIR Challenge Slack channel. That’s where everyone doing the challenge will be. You can ask questions, discuss concepts, and see what others are building.

If you registered for one-on-one coaching, we’ll let you know how to schedule sessions with your instructors over email. You will have access to them throughout the 15-day period, you can get on a call with them anytime and ask them any questions you have.

How the challenge works

You need to build a FHIR app. In the next lesson, we’ll detail exactly what you’ll be building.

Before that, you’ll need to know some basic FHIR concepts. If you haven’t already taken the FHIR Fundamentals course, start there. Complete it, then come back to the challenge.

Once you’re ready, there are two ways in which you can build the app. One is using Lovable and vibe-coding your way through it. The other is to use an IDE and write actual code. In both paths, you can (and we encourage you to) use AI to help you. Both paths are covered in consecutive modules, so feel free to choose based on your comfort level. You could even do vibe-coding first, and then go through the IDE approach to understand the details of what’s going on.

The approach you choose doesn’t matter, as long as the app is working. In the end, you’ll record a video of it and post it to the Slack channel. That’s the end of the challenge.

And, if you’re one of three lucky participants, there will be prizes too.
