How the Certification Works
Congratulations on reaching the final module of FHIR Fundamentals!
Think about how far you’ve come. You started with the basics of what FHIR is, got comfortable with resources and data types, learned how to actually talk to a FHIR server using the REST API, and even set up and deployed your own server. That’s a lot of ground covered!
Now it’s time to bring it all together and earn something which proves that you’ve mastered the concepts of FHIR: the FHIR Fundamentals Certificate.
Before you dive into the quiz, let’s quickly walk through how the whole thing works, so there are no surprises along the way.
What you’ll be tested on
The good news first: nothing on this quiz goes beyond what you’ve already learned. Everything is drawn from the four modules you’ve just finished.
You can expect questions on things like:
- FHIR resources and how they reference each other (remember how Bob’s
Encounterpointed toPatient/bob-patientinstead of repeating his details?) - Data types, from primitives to complex ones
- RESTful interactions - reading, searching, creating, and updating resources
- Bundles and transactions
- Reading a real FHIR resource and spotting what it represents (or what’s off about it)
If you followed along with the lessons and gave the exercises a real shot, you already have everything you need.
How the quiz works
The quiz is 20 questions, and to earn your certificate you need to get at least 15 of them right - that’s a 75% pass mark.
The questions are spread across the entire course, so it’s worth a quick scroll back through any module that felt a little shaky before you begin.
You’ve got 3 attempts (and a cooldown)
Here’s the part worth paying attention to. You get three attempts to pass.
If you don’t make it on a given try, there’s a 24-hour cooldown before your next attempt unlocks.
And don’t worry - that wait isn’t there to punish you. It’s there to give you breathing room to go back, revisit whatever tripped you up, and come back with a clear head instead of guessing through it a second time. So if attempt one doesn’t go your way, treat the next day as study time, not downtime.
When you pass
The moment you cross 15 out of 20, your certificate is generated automatically. No forms, no emails, no waiting - it’s just there, ready for you to download and share on LinkedIn, drop into your résumé, or keep as proof of what you’ve built.
A few tips before you start
- Skim the module summaries rather than rereading everything - this quiz rewards understanding the concepts, not memorising every detail.
- Get comfortable reading a FHIR resource. A few questions will show you a snippet and ask what it is or what’s wrong with it.
- Know your REST interactions - what a read, search, create, and update each do and return.
- Take the first attempt seriously. With three tries and a cooldown between them, your fastest path to that certificate is nailing it early, not treating attempt one as a warm-up.
That’s everything! When you’re ready, head to the next lesson and let’s get you certified. You’ve put in the work - go earn it. 💪
